How to Review a Used Car Inspection Report Before Export from China
A practical way to review vehicle identity, inspection findings, and repair evidence before an overseas purchase.
Confirm the vehicle identity, inspection scope, unresolved findings, and agreed follow-up work before treating a report as complete.
A used-car inspection report is most useful when you can connect its findings to a specific vehicle and a clear purchase decision. For overseas buyers sourcing from China, the following review process helps turn photographs, test results, and repair notes into an organized set of questions.
01Match the report to the exact vehicle
Start with the VIN, model, trim, odometer reading, inspection date, and inspection location. Compare these details with the seller’s quotation and the photographs supplied for the car. Ask for clear images of identifying plates rather than relying only on a typed number in a report.
Check whether the report refers to the vehicle currently offered and whether repairs or additional use have occurred since inspection. If the seller substitutes another car, request a fresh assessment for that vehicle. Keep the original report and later revisions together so changes remain visible.
02Read the scope before the findings
Find out who carried out the inspection, what access they had, and which tests were included. Ask whether the vehicle was lifted, scanned for diagnostic faults, started from cold, and road-tested where permitted and practical. A report should distinguish completed checks from items that could not be assessed.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s buyer guidance explains that a vehicle history report does not replace an independent mechanical inspection. Treat maintenance records, history information, and a current condition assessment as separate evidence. Request clarification when a seller presents one document as proof of all three.
03Connect each finding to useful evidence
For bodywork observations, request photographs showing the affected area and enough surrounding detail to locate it. For paint measurements or diagnostic results, ask what equipment and method were used. The inspector should explain the significance of their findings and any limitations rather than providing unexplained numbers.
Ask for additional investigation where the report describes structural damage, corrosion, leaks, warning lights, or signs requiring specialist review. Avoid deciding that a vehicle is acceptable from cosmetic photographs alone. Record unresolved questions and identify who will answer them before you proceed.
04Separate repair needs from purchase preferences
Ask a qualified inspector to distinguish safety-related findings, mechanical repairs, routine maintenance, and cosmetic preferences. Request a written description of the proposed work and the evidence needed to confirm completion. A general promise to “prepare the car” does not explain which findings will be addressed.
For recall questions, contact the manufacturer or an appropriate authorized service provider using the VIN and market specification. The NHTSA recall lookup is a U.S. resource; do not assume it provides complete coverage of a China-market vehicle. Request confirmation relevant to the actual car and its destination.
05Add a separate review for electric vehicles
When buying a used electric vehicle, ask what the battery assessment measured, when it was performed, and which vehicle it identifies. Request the underlying diagnostic findings and an explanation of reported battery condition. Keep a dashboard range photograph separate from a battery test report.
Ask the inspector to document visible charging-port condition, supplied charging equipment, and any faults noted during the agreed checks. Confirm charging compatibility and available service support for your destination with the appropriate providers. Record anything outside the inspector’s scope as an open question rather than a passed test.
06Close the report before dispatch
Create an action list linking every agreed repair to a completion record, dated photographs, or a follow-up check. Decide in writing which findings are acceptable and which require resolution before payment or shipment milestones. Ask how discrepancies will be handled if a later check differs from the original report.
Before dispatch, request a current condition record and confirm the included keys and accessories. Keep it alongside the inspection report for comparison at arrival. Our export quotation comparison guide can help you record inspection and preparation costs clearly in the purchasing discussion.
